Mercersburg Academy Wins Commonwealth Cup

Mercersburg defeated visiting Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy 2-0 November 10 to claim the Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association Commonwealth Cup championship.

The teams were fairly evenly balanced, though Mercersburg put a lot of pressure on the visiting goal in the first half. Still, the game was scoreless until Caroline Wilkinson '23 did her best impression of David Beckham. When the Blue Storm earned a free kick from just outside the penalty area, Hebrew Academy set up a wall 10 yards away. Wilkinson beautifully curved her kick around the right side of the wall and tucked it into the far right corner of the net to put Mercersburg up 1-0.

In the second half, the Cougars pushed forward and drove the ball into the Blue Storm defensive end on a regular basis. But goalie Annie Mohr '26 and Mercersburg defense held firm, and the Blue Storm offense created several good chances of its own. With just a couple minutes left to play, Sam Titus '23 launched another free kick from about 30 yards out. The ball deflected off the crossbar and goalie, and Wilkinson was there to pounce on the rebound and score her second goal of the game.

Mercersburg ended the season with a record of 6-8-1, but went 4-1-1 over its last six games to finish the season strong.
