Pennsylvania's independent schools came together for the first official state championships in 2007, when Academy of the New Church (ANC) captured the boys' title and the Academy of Notre Dame won the girls' title.
The tournament now includes all members of PAISAA, drawing from the InterAc League, the Friends Schools League, the Tri-County League, and the Mid-Atlantic Prep League, as well as some independents such as Kiski School.
After ANC claimed its second title in 2008, Friends Central dominated the tournament for four consecutive years, taking home championships in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Germantown Academy defeated the Kiski School for the Patriots' first crown in 2013. 2014 saw the third different champion in three seasons, as the Hill School outlasted Westtown School 56-50.
The first two rounds of the events are held at the home of the higher seeded team, while the semifinals and finals, which draw standing-room only crowds to see numerous NCAA Division I recruits on the floor, are typically staged at a neutral site.
