AFS wins first state title

Abington Friends School topped Penn Charter 65-59 at Montgomery County Community College on Saturday, February 22nd to claim the 2019-20 PAISAA Girls Basketball championship.

The Kangaroos entered the tournament as the #5 seed and dispatched #12 Agnes Irwin 69-27 and #4 Westtown 47-41 to advance to the PAISAA semifinals for the fifth consecutive season.

AFS faced #1 seed Germantown Academy on Friday, February 21st as part of the PAISAA semifinals doubleheader at neutral site Friends' Central. The Roos jumped out to a 17-6 advantage over the Patriots after the opening frame behind 5 points each from Kendall Hodges, Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes and Ty'Lah Washington. AFS built on their early lead, outscoring G.A. in each subsequent quarter en route to a 63-42 victory. Washington paced the Roos with 25 points, including 13 for 20 from the free throw line. Ross-Barnes added 16 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists with Paige Mott (8 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks) and Hodges (7 points) also chipping in. Jaye Haynes (13 points) and Maddie Vizza (8) led the way for the Patriots. #2 Penn Charter's 70-61 defeat of #3 Notre Dame Academy in the nightcap set the stage for Saturday's championship tilt.

As she had the night before, Kendall Hodges helped to set the tone for AFS in the title game, notching 6 of her 12 points in the first quarter as the Kangaroos took an 11-10 lead over the Quakers. Zaniyyah Ross-Barnes's 8 second quarter points propelled the Roos to a 29-23 lead at the half. After Penn Charter closed to 32-31 early in the third quarter on a Carmen Williams three-pointer, Ross-Barnes answered with threes of her own on the next two AFS possessions to keep the Quakers at bay. AFS's lead ballooned to 15 points early in the final frame before a furious Penn Charter rally, highlighted by Aleah Snead's 11 fourth quarter points, cut the final margin to 6. Ross-Barnes totaled 24 points and 8 rebounds for the victorious Roos while Ty'Lah Washington added 20 points and 4 steals. Kendall Hodges (12 points), Paige Mott (6) and Aby Camarou (3) rounded out the scorers for AFS. Kait Carter (17) and Carmen Williams (16) paced the Quakers.

AFS's victory marks the first PAISAA basketball championship in school history, and came on the Roos first appearance in the title game. AFS finishes at 20-8 overall on the season.
